IOT, Internet Of Things, but what does that mean for Building Automation?

IoT is paving the way towards the next industrial revolution – but what does it mean for us now?

How does it impact our facility managers, building engineers and decision makers regarding building automation going forward?

iot

The definition of Building Automation is “automatic centralized control of a building’s HVAC, lighting, Access Control, and other interrelated systems through a Building Management System (BMS) or Building Automation System (BAS)”.  This industry has been around for over a century, as early as 1883 when the first thermostat was invented.

The definition of IOT is “the interconnection via the Internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data”.  The term was first coined by Realcomm in an article in 2002, and now it’s hard to find any article on technical matter without the term listed.

Combine them together, and it forms a term that hit the industry closer to 2014, BIoT.  BUILDING Internet of Things, when Building Automation first became part of the IoT acronym.   This technology removes the proprietary requirements and protocol limitations of the business that has always building automation, and brings us into the newest form of the industry –  IP based controls and complete connectivity, limitless options.   These options upgrade what was an already smart building, into an intelligent building.   IoT offers massive amounts of data going to the cloud to be processed,  analyzed and returned to help systems decide what needs to happen next, instead of saving information on proprietary software on an antiquated computer waiting for a physical person to come decipher and act on the findings.
